Big gap between release bearing & clutch cover?

Yep, thats basically it. I think theres a little more than 1/2" gap but I'd like to re-check more precisely.

Your right in saying that Im running out of throw on the fork before the CRB comes into contact with the fingers. -My concern is that not only will I not be able to disengage the clutch, but also if the CRB dosnt sit back against the 'box (or pretty close), then the slack in front of it may allow the fork to find its way off the pivot ball, or the pushrod to come out of the slave cylinder.

If I get chance this evening I'll take some more precise measurements and post them up.

On your last point, the slave cylinder has a spring behind the piston and this keeps the CRB lightly on the fingers of the clutch.
So no worries on that point.

Just had a quick look at your pictures, and one thing I noticed is that your release bearing is not the correct one for use with the pressure plate that's fitted to your engine.

The pressure plate is the early SD1 V8 version, but the bearing is the later "self centre" type and cannot be used with the early plate.

Hi Jim,
This is very interesting. I believe the clutch setup I have is the one on the V8Tuner site, rated to 'a conserative 340lbs', which specifys the 'radius type' CRB. I can find the bearing at a few places, but no carrier! -Rimmer Bros states it as no longer available, and to use the later self-centering type, along with a suitable cover. -Given that I've forked out nearly £400 for a heavy duty clutch setup, replacing it with a stock later version isnt really an option!
Now that I mention it, I've struggled to find ANY info on the earlier radius type CRB setup, other than the bearing itself. Is this an obsolete arrangement?

Also, what are the differences between the radius/self centre types?

Tom,

The clutch up set is fine, it's just that you're using the wrong type of CRB.

You need to have the old style roll face bearing and the cast iron carrier to work with the pressure plate that you've got fitted on the engine.

The bearings are still readily available, but the carriers have been obsolete for a good number of years now.

If you want to drop me a PM or ring me, I should have a secondhand carrier that would do the job.

Hi Jim,
After reieving the early bearing carrier from you I fitted it with a radius bearing and used a punch to lock it in place (the tack welds you mentioned wouldnt take to the bearing).
Its now fitted and all bolted up and seems to hook up with the clutch cover with plenty of throw in the release arm remaining.

I'll take it off the stand tomorrow and fit the slave cylinder for the sake of security, but its looking good!
