Long snout 4.6 crank with older style front cover.

Post by hoffbug »

Hello
I am in the process of building a Buick/Rover hybrid engine.
I have a 4.6 block, and a 4.6 crank I plan on having offset ground to around a 3.4" stroke. The engine will use modified 1964 aluminum Buick 300 heads.

I had thought about using an interim front cover with the crank driven pump and provisions for a distributor..... but I live in the USA .....and interim covers are about as rare as hens teeth around here.

Q.How do I run the long snout 4.6 crank with the older short snout style front cover and associated components. Ie dampner, pullys etc...
? Is there some sort of spacer available?

Thanks, Tony

only one that comes to mind is http://www.rpiv8.co.uk/ but it shouldn't be hard to make. I am sure someone on here will be able to give you the dimensions.

The exact dimensions I don't know, but it's simple enough to work it out with an engine to measure. It's a thick walled piece of tube, that sits snugly over the crankshaft. Basically you put the pulley on (with timing cover etc in place), and it's clear that the crankshaft nut & washer poke out too far to hold the pulley. So you make the spacer to fit between the pulley and the washer.

Also you may need to countersink one of the crossbolts depending on your oil pump configuration.

I didnt countersink my crossbolt. I just ground it off at an angle to get the early oil pump on. There is still enough meat on it to fit a socket.

See here from Rimmer bros.

TIMING COVERS
If the timing cover you intend to fit to your short engine incorporates a crank-driven oil pump, please inform the Sales Department at the time of ordering (3.5 & 3.9 litre Standard Short Engines only).
Uprated 3.9 litre Short engines, as well as all Short Engines of 4.0 litres and above, are suitable for timing covers which incorporate crank-driven oil pumps. If fitting the earlier type of timing cover - with camshaft-driven oil pump - to a short engine of 4.0 litres or above, please also request crank spacer, part no. STC1893SPACER, which will ensure the crankshaft pulley is securely fitted. If in any doubt, a member of our Sales Department will be pleased to help you.

V8 Developments, a sponsor above, would also be able to sort you with a spacer.

Thanks guys. Ill have to add this info to the list. Ill most likely be purchasing a single plane intake manifold from Wildcat in the spring. Maybe Ian has the spacers too.

D&D Fabrications a bit more local to you, can probably supply a spacer or possibly a late front cover if you can run without distributor.

Others that may help could be Mantell Motorsports, Rebornco and BMC Brian McCullough? all in the states
