if its only done it since the gearbox has been fitted i would start looking as previously mentioned, at starter to ring gear mesh and shimming of the starter.
or check the ring gear full stop.

I also wondered if the flex plate is bent, a bit like a buckled wheel?

Is there a gap at the bottom of the bellhousing where you can see it?

Chris.

Is the throw out and cogs greased?

It could be that being new it is not moving freely and could do with assistance

When Bone's starter played up at the RR day, I turned the engine by hand several times to make sure the ring gear had moved to 3 or 4 different positions and it still just clicked without engaging.

After the new earth leads were fitted it seemed to settle down for a while. Then it started clicking again as if the as if the drive cog was not engaging far engough to allow the solenoid to put power to the starter motor.

Certainly sounds like its not engaging far enough to me..

If you need a Rover V8 flex plate. I have a spare one with brand new ring gear if you need it.
Yours for the price of postage. Or get it from me at the Pod on 11th / 12th October.

Thanks for the offer Perry, well my day started at 7 am, in the garage making a spacer, starter out 1st time fitted the plate, starter back in, the usual click, starter out for 2nd time to put some washers on and try that, starter back in and again the click. i get under the car and my bro turns the key and i can see the cog engaging, So know we look at the wiring, test it changed it, and still just a click, i follow the wires from the starter and one goes to the fuse box and guess what i found the problem after all this bloody time . A FUSE WAS,NT IN CORRECTLY, once i put it in right ,tried the car and it started and 25 attempts later its still starting, so took starter out took off the washers and plate ,starter back in and its still starting, ive gone through 3 starters 2 batterys and it was a poxy fuse, thanks for the replies all, :D Rich

i hoped this was the last problem with the starter, went to start it and a horrible noise and shudder felt, turns out the new starter has gone loose at the bottom of it, the little rod can be moved about by hand, rich

I had a problem like this the other day.. Turned out to be a poor connection of the positive cable into the battery clamp. The clamp was on the battery tight but the connection inside the battery clamp was quite mucky and loose!

CHanged that and she spins like a goodn :)
