tuning hotwire system

Post by markmills2000uk »

so far the knowledge i have is

throttle potentimeter thing
Red from volt meter to red wire of pot. Black wire from volt meter to Green of pot and get to between 0.34 and 0.35 so i put it to 0.34 volts

next is the air flow meter which for a non cat system like mine is using multimeter on Red with Black trace and Blue with Red trace wires get to between 1.0 and 1.5 volts

so next i need to do the allan screw bit thats by the throttle on the plenum, does anybody know how to do this

is there anything else i need to do,

cheers guys,

Warm up the motor to normal running temp.
Remove the rubber hose that feeds the stepper motor and blank off both of the stubs it was fitted to.
Adjust the base idle to 525 rpm on a good tacho with the allan screw by the throttle plate.
Remove blanking plugs and restore rubber hose.

The adjustment of the AFM may well require altering as this should be set to give correct emmissions for the MOT test.

The above adjustments may well be interdependent.

Since engines typically aren't at all keen to idle at 500 rpm, I find it's easier just to squash that bypass hose flat by pressing it against the throttle assembly, when adjusting the base idle. If the engine seems to be in danger of stalling, just release the hose for a moment until the revs have recovered.

im unable to do it as the engine is running quite badly at the mo,i cant figure it out, with everything connected it wont start if i take the vacuum hose off the fuel pressure regulater it will start it i put my finger over the pipe that comes out the plenum which is now open it stalls, any ideas,

car also seems to be running quite rich, floods really easily

are you saying when you block the pipe the engine stalls?

If so unscrew the air screw by the throttle a little with everything put back together and see if that helps. It could be that this air bypass is gumed up (or even badly adjusted) so if it doesnt help I would maybe look at cleaning this out. I am not sure if the stepper motor is capable of supplying enough air for the engine to idle on its own.

ok that problem just went away but its still not running right,i tried adjusting that screw and it doesnt reall do much to the engine running so as im not sure why its not running right,im going to put another hotwire plenum on and start again and go from there,

no doubt il be back on tommorrow asking more questions,
i thought it was just going to be easy connect it all up and it work, theres always something,im slowly getting there though

does it make no difference with the stepper motor blocked off? If you try adjusting it with this still in-line then the stepper will auto alter to compensate so you wont see any change.

i couldnt get the car started when i blocked off the two pipes so i used some mole grips to clamp the pipe down, its possible the vacuum was still getting through

im going to give it a another go tommorrow,

i just thought, could my engine be running bad cos i used a 470 ohm resistor instead a 520 ohm resistor on the wire that tells the ecu to go inot manual mode

iv got it running ok now apart from the fact that its running very rich,a mechanic i called said i should be using a red tune resistor instead of a green one,
does this sound right
