Rover race oil sump pick??

Hi.

My 5.2litre SD1 will need better oil sump to control oil flow. It will flash oil light when i made some serious drifting practise..

So guy´s, have you got any pick how to make good sump and baffle plate.
I usually drive street races, 1/4mile and near future i will try to go track day´s..
I have got STD SD1 oil sump my engine, and my friend just give me RRC oil sump.. And i´m thinking to made alloy sump, my friend can cut alloy flange to me and i can made all those plates etc in my work, inc welding..

If you are getting oil surge already then in my opinion changing the sump is only a band aid.

For racing you should be looking at a dry sump arrangement

I manufacture wet sump pans for the E30 M3, these are basically an evolution of the original DTM sump pan. I use the rubber flappers (available from BMW or Cosworth) instead of the metal "trap doors" as they are more reliable IMO.
Basically you want to build a sealed box around the pickup,about 1 litre capacity, and the rubber flappers will allow the oil in (but not out) Once you have finished building it, pour in 2-3 litres of water (about the same viscosity as hot oil) and tilt it side to side, and front to back. This gives you a good idea of what the oil does under acceleration and braking, and cornering. It also shows you if the oil is leaking past anywhere, you want it to retain as much oil inside the box as long as possible.

It is not that hard thing to achieve a wet sump system that will support decent cornering speeds (mine work on very high G corners with slicks and no oil surge)

its great that you have shared this idea of yours with people on the forum about the rubber flap set up given me a chance to try something similar now as cannot afford dry sump set up for my car, the car have is for fast road possibly trackday but i could still have surge problems theres no oil light on on cornering have not done any flying starts on the 10 inch rubber i have on the car until i improve sump but do not want to take any chances thanks fellar

Home made custom sump.. capacity approx 1.5l more than stock SD1 sump.

Final measurements before weldings..

So it don´t have any plates inside yet.. And my question is what is the correct level for horizontal baffle? I have understand that approx 10mm over the oil level when engine is running.. And engine will use approx 2 litre when running?
Or can i use same measurements as RRC V8 oil sump has? Horizontal baffle is approx 100mm above bottom of the sump.. So it will sit same level as oil when engine don´t run..
I will try to use BMW M3 rupper flaps to handling side splashing.. cost approx 12£ inc vat

And another question. Best place for oil pick-up pipe? I have got SD1 style pick-up and new 3.9 serpentine big bore pick-up pipe.. And i found that SD1 type will sit middle of the sump and 3.9 type will sit front of the sump.. I understand middle of the sump is best for all, track and strip and street? If you run strip, then back wall is the best position..? Clearance for pick-up and sump is approx 7mm. I think i will modify this 3.9 lite big bore pipe to suit middle of the sump. Following on with this topic but does anyone have a recommendation for a sump pan for a 4.6 Rover in a TR7 suitable for circuit racing?
I was planning to modify a steel pan for extra capacity and adding gates and baffles but, quite frankly, don't have a clue what would work best and my welding skills suck.

My own setup without advice.. Not finished
+6.5l oil capacity + oil filter and oil cooler.. Approx 7.6l total?

I will use rupper trapdoors, they will response quicker than steel doors, and are 100% dense to back flow.. I do not want to weld those plates if it will need some cleaning in future.. So i weld small alloy piece´s to sump and use M6 bolts..
Horizontal plate is approx 10mm above oil level when engine is running.. And side plates when trapdoor opens will give extra 1l oil capacity to oil pick-up pipe.. Pick-up pipe and sump clearance is 7mm and pipe will sit middle of the oil capacity and approx 20mm of the middle from driving direction..
