here's a zf 4 speed that may appeal.

I think the ZF is the only non-P5,P6,SD1 autobox for 2WD, and they were only fitted to Sherpa / LDV's etc. But you can mix & match a 2WD output end into a Range Rover box with sufficient spannering.....

you're much better off converting a Jag or BMW box to fit the Rover - undo the bellhousing and bolt on the replacement. To do 4WD Range Rover to 2WD requires stripping and re-building the box and the output shafts and housings from a 2WD box.

You just need the torque convertor, flex plate (and crank adaptors) and bellhousing from a Range Rover /Discovery and an appropriate 2WD box.

4HP22 were fitted to XJ40 Jags and the one I have in the shed does not have a speedo drive.

I agree that it's easier to change over the bellhousing end. I wasn't sure if the input shafts were the same between the various versions.

The Sherpa version has a cable speedo drive, and the most substantial output shaft bearing that I've ever seen!

Full teardown & rebuild pics here for reference:

Also note that the governer is engine specific - it sets the maximum engine speed before an upshift. I have a Volvo governer on my V8, and it upshifts at 6000rpm which is a tad late. The Range Rover one is set for 5500rpm.

Yep no problem, i picked up a jag box, range rover bellhousing and flywheel/flexplate and adaptors and it all worked fine, the range rover torque convertor has 4 holes, i'm pretty sure the jag only had 3, johnImage

Thanks john for all your help only other thing has your gearbox got a speedo drive output for a cable or electric pickup and if not how do you plan on run a speedo?
And do you know what jag it came from?
Sorry for so many questions.
