How to start a 3.5 rover v8 Simply????
Hi guys i just bought a rover v8 its on the floor all there ready for its test start but i dont no alot about wiring, well i dont no nothing, so can you tell me the most basic way of wiring and what i need to do just to turn it on and get it going so, where do i connect the coil and the starter motor etc etc, thanks for your help its an old v8 so uses points on the dizzy and stuff
why do v8 engiines send chills up your spine
If it's points, then it's pretty easy.
Bat +ve to starter big terminal on the back. Bat -ve to the engine block.
Bat +ve to coil +ve
Coil -ve to points
Then connect the small spade terminal on the starter to bat +ve and it'll spin over and you'll be away.
Remove bat +ve from coil +ve to switch off.
The starter might have two spades, not sure which one you need.
I think that's all you'll need.
Chris.

What if it's electronic ignition? DLM8 for example. Only asking as I'm in the same situation, very soon.ChrisJC wrote:If it's points, then it's pretty easy.

Almost the same. The difference is that there are two wires between the distributor & coil, one for coil -ve (white & black), and one for coil +ve (white only).marcjagman wrote:What if it's electronic ignition? Haynes do a very good book on car electrics which covers all the basics - as well as more advanced stuff. Unlike most Haynes manuals, it's well worth buying.marcjagman wrote:Thanks, car electrics are black magic to me, that's why I use carbs. Where do the wires from the coil go to? I presume +ve goes to live feed via ignition does the -ve go to earth or battery and does it make a difference or does the coil only have a live feed?
If such things really are a black art to you, it's best to either learn about them or leave to someone who does understand them. As bodging invariably ends in tears.
