If it's points, then it's pretty easy.

Bat +ve to starter big terminal on the back. Bat -ve to the engine block.
Bat +ve to coil +ve
Coil -ve to points

Then connect the small spade terminal on the starter to bat +ve and it'll spin over and you'll be away.

Remove bat +ve from coil +ve to switch off.

The starter might have two spades, not sure which one you need.

I think that's all you'll need.

Hi
+ve = posotive = red terminal on battery, -ve = negative = black terminal on battery

What if it's electronic ignition? DLM8 for example. Only asking as I'm in the same situation, very soon.

You are bolting the engine to something solid I hope?

Almost the same. The difference is that there are two wires between the distributor & coil, one for coil -ve (white & black), and one for coil +ve (white only).

This all assumes that you are on carbs. If you are on an efi system, more wiring is involved (though not really more difficult)

All the required info is included in previous posts - a search should provide everything you need

Thanks, car electrics are black magic to me, that's why I use carbs. Where do the wires from the coil go to? I presume +ve goes to live feed via ignition does the -ve go to earth or battery and does it make a difference or does the coil only have a live feed?

Haynes do a very good book on car electrics which covers all the basics - as well as more advanced stuff. Unlike most Haynes manuals, it's well worth buying.

If such things really are a black art to you, it's best to either learn about them or leave to someone who does understand them. As bodging invariably ends in tears.

Will try and find that book. I have fitted full looms before but they usually come with a wall chart, labels etc as I've built loads of 7's in the past. So, what wires do I need for the coil? +ve to ignition, does the -ve need wiring or is that just for the rev counter?

Have a look at '3.9 EFI - no spark from coil' thread in this section. You'll find a wiring diagram for the DLM dizzy and coil etc courtesy of Ramon Alban.

Fantastic, now totally deaf as it fired once carbs filled up. Cough and spluttered for a bit to blow cobwebs out then settled down. Now to strip down and rebuild. Been collecting bits for years, now it's time to fit them.
