have you had the oil pump apart or if the engine has been sitting around for a while ..the oil pump will not self prime , the best way is to pack the pump with vaseline or you can make a tool to spin the oil pump via the dissy drive with an electris drill ... if you run it and wait for oil pressure you WILL kill it ..

remember it's only a bodge if it DOSN'T worK

I meant, if I wired the amp to coil wrong, will I kill it?

I can probably handle the oil pump priming. I think/hope !!!

If you connect the coil the wrong way round then the sparks will jump from the edge of the spark plug to the center electrode and not the outer way round, but it will still work but not as efficiently.
But the amp must be connected the correct way round as described before.

OK, tried all that and failed big-style. God knows what I'm doing wrong.

Tried taking alternator-live to coil+, coil+ to amp+.
Ground to coil-, coil- to amp-.

Still nothing.

Think I'm going to try and use my megasquirt for the spark instead, see how I get on with that...

Sigh... no trial for me tomorrow then !

You stated that you connected groung to coil-ve. That's incorrect.
The -ve of the coil goes to the -ve on the amp. Only other connections to the coil negative would be a wire to the revcounter.

Special thanks to badger for doing the engine work for me (about 18 months ago, I'm a slow mover...)

It will be a lot more work to use your MS for the spark than getting the original system working. But if getting the original working means spending serious money, it would be the way to go. As it is capable of better results.
Snag is there are so many ways of doing it.

I started off with my MS fuel only, then fitted EDIS about a year later.

Yup, agreed Dave. As you can see from the video (but I didn't make clear), it's running on distributor still. And though we only fired it up for a few seconds, it does sound pretty good ! :)

Just an update in case anyone else gets the same thing - I was 180 deg out on the dizzy. A common mistake and I was annoyed coz I took the rocker cover off to check cyl1 was where it should have been. Or where I thought it should have been.I lazy-boy'd it and swapped the plug leads over and it's fine now.

Anyway, some final timing adjustments needed. It ran like a clock last night but timing is too advanced. Unlike me, who is clearly operating in the other direction ;-)

Got a gun today so it'll get sorted.

Thanks again to all for help, and badger for the work he did on it :-)
