Range rover 3.9 no spark??

Post by V8James »

Hi all
Range rover 3.9 on a j plate

picked it up cheap as a non runner
After cranking it over for a while i can smell a hint of fuel from the tail pipe which sort of says to me that there is fuel getting in but just no spark

It already has a new coil + new plugs, whats the best sequence to be checking + trouble shooting?

Cheers
James

Had the same problem on my 3.5 efi recently

Turned out to be the amplifier module on the side of the distributor.

Check out the "she won't start" thread for full details

Right its running

12v at coil when ignition on, but when cranking theres nothing
Put a wire from battery + to coil + and it fired straight up + will keep running when i take the wire away

Any suggestions as to what may be the cause of this?
only thing that spring to mind is ignition switch

Cheers for all the help

I seem to remember this can be one of the relays that over rides the oil pressure safty cut out while cranking, but I am sure some one will be along to correct me if I am wrong :D

isnt there meant to be a 12v feed from the crank side of the starter solenoid?
check to see if any terminals have come off the solenoid etc,.

Mine was a defective rotor arm

The simple RR manual ignition checked identified the faults for me

Haven't got them to hand but could dig them out if you need them

Any ideas where im likely to find this relay? is there a chance it will be with fuel pump relay?
