How much tax do we pay on car parts imported from the US ?

Post by Mark »

Real Steel want £1557 for a Super Duty T5 gearbox and Jegs.com will do it for £982 delivered to the UK.

What kind of taxes would I pay ?

Thanks for any info :D

From memory duty is 5%
But they charge import VAT too at 17.5%
You'll also get charged an admin feeby TNT or whoever

I'd bank on a total of 25% and expect some change back

So I'm looking at approx £1230, might be worth 'phoning Real Steel and seeing if their gold discount card applies to gearboxes ?

Mark,

Summit Racing have them at $1295 + shipping so may worth checking out.

http://www.summitracing.com/search/Prod ... toview=SKU

What car and engine do you intend mating this to?

I would also ask if you haven't already, what the ratios are for this box as T5's vary by quote a lot, most come with an extremely high 5th at 0.63/1 which to high for performance use, the super duty may have a more sensible ratio of around 0.8/1

There are also differences between the chevy and ford versions in terms of the shifter/gear lever position and angle of the gearbox in the car.

Have you sourced a bell housing?

something like that.

Its the $ cost + $ shipping + 5% duty + DHL Admin fee + DHL UK Shipping and then all + vat.

Then when your gearbox is faulty you have to reverse the whole process.

I will be fitting a 302 Ford into a Sierra and hoping to get some half decent mpg on a run with the high top gear. The guy I bought my 7 1/2" cossie diff from ran one in a tuned 289 Sierra and said it pulled top gear no problems.

Mark,

What diff ratio? a 3.31 should be ok but any lower may make 1st gear quite low depending on your wheel and tyre choice.

3.64:1 Cossie diff with 17 inch wheels.

Info on box below, any one know the size of the output shaft on a Cossie box ?
I'm hoping to use a standard Serra Cosworth prop :)

•Application: 79-93 V8 engine only
•Torque Capacity: 330 lb-ft
•Output shaft: 28 spline
•Input shaft: 10 spline x 1.0625" shaft diameter
•1st gear ratio: 2.95:1
•2nd gear ratio: 1.94:1
•3rd gear ratio: 1.34:1
•4th gear ratio: 1.00:1
•5th gear ratio: 0.63:1
•Short throw shifter included
•Speedometer Gear Drive: 7 Tooth
Special Features:

•Cobra style pocket bearing
•Input bearing retainer material: steel
•Carbon fiber blocker rings 3-4
•Double moly 2nd and 3rd speed as well as countershaft cluster gears.

EDIT

I just fed the numbers into an online calculator and got this result.

6000 rpm in 1st = 40 mph
6000 rpm in 2nd = 60 mph
6000 rpm in 3rd = 87 mph
6000 rpm in 4th = 117 mph
6000 rpm in 5th = 185mph

If the engine peaks at 5500 rpm it should in theory pull 170 mph.

any thoughts ?

cheers

Aerodynamics take over at higher speeds. Increase in drag resistance isn't a linear progression. The power needed to push an object through a fluid (Air) increases as the cube of the velocity.

In other words if it were to take 100bhp to reach 70mph then it takes 400bhp to reach 140mph....that's just an example.

To pull 170 you would likely need well in excess of 500bhp and some good aerodynamics.

The Range Rover I'm doing at the moment will have a Buick 455 and around 550bhp / 600lbs/ft and gearing that would in theory see it pull 170mph at 5500. Truth is even with all that torque I'll be lucky to see more than 4500 rpm in top which equates to 140mph.

If a Sierra Cosworth can do 150mph with 220bhp how fast do you rekon it would do with say 340 bhp ?

I'm not that bothered about top speed, just liked the idea of doing 60mph at 2000 rpm

cheers

about 170 to 175 mph, by the maths, but I think that is optomistic.
