Starter Motor Clearance Issues

Post by sowen »

I'm trial fitting my rover v8 in my rover p6 and have a problem with the starter motor resting on one of my suspension mounts preventing the engine from dropping into place:

Image

I want to avoid modifying the suspension mount if I can, and wondered if anyone has or knows of a starter that would fit in place and allow the engine to move over 1/2 inch at that point. It measures about 4.25 inches from the engine mount boss and the outer edge of the starter body, so ideally it needs to be 3.75 inches or less at that point.

Any help appreciated

Simon

I've been pointed in the direction of those reduction type starters, just that I need to know it will clear the suspension mount. If that is yours, could you measure the distance from the engine mount boss to the outer part of the starter please?

That would be brilliant if you could do that for me. It's just holding up making the manifolds and final bulkhead and inner wing mods on my project.

Hi,

Didn`t the p6 rover did come with a rover v8 fitted?

is your engine install differant to this? it maybe the engine postion you have is giving you more problems with the clearance issues.

you wont get much more clearance with another starter motor, you can struggle with header clearance issues.

regards

I run a reduction gear starter and can measure that tonight for you no problem.
You may have a larger starter in there now.
Lucas did 3 different types to the best of my knowledge and the smallest with the solenoid at the top was a 9m 90 unit.
My starter thats in now is tiny tiny and am sure would give you loads of clearance.
Will post late tonight.
cheers

My starter is 6 3/4 inches long.
Looking again at your set up your solenoid is below and I think this is the largest of the 3 motors.
With the smaller 9m 90 you would have no problems and the solenoid is at the top.

Andy, some of the P6"s came out with 4 pots and Sowen's was a 4 before he got started on his journey.

There is a big thread here http://www.classicroverforum.com/viewto ... =21&t=5288 to show you the transformation it has undergone and it is nothing short of inspired what he has done to it.
Cheers,
John

Width is the problem here, looks like you measured the length there  :D , but yeah, it looks like I have the largest starter motor. It works fine with my ethos of trying the worst case scenario or cheapest readily available parts first, seeing if they work then either finding a better susbstitute or making them fit regardless.

This is a 2000 shell, being retrofitted with the rover v8. OK, I hear everyone saying why not start with a v8 shell, but most of them are rotten or overpriced and completely unsuitable for the project I have in mind:

^ not a sight usually seen on the a p6, blower+scoop poking through bonnet, twin tailpipes and 225 tyres on 8" rims, hiding a jaguar powerlock diff

Think there were quite a few base unit mods between four and eight cylinder cars. Pretty certain this included front chassis rails.

Mine is the SD1 fitting, and the diameter of the bit in line with the pinion is 3.5 inches. The actual motor position varies by application for RV8s - rather the same as the solenoid on the standard motors. The SD1 type is underneath.

Thanks for that, I can ignore the sd1 type now as it would still require some work to the suspension mount to fit. The p6 starter is 4" diameter, so I'd only gain 1/4", where ideally I need 1/2" to clear.

I have just measured the width of my motor and it comes in at 3"for the body and a little extra for the wire running from the solenoid/gearbox to the main body.
Don't know if this is of any help to you?
