Looking again at your set up your solenoid is below and I think this is the largest of the 3 motors.
With the smaller 9m 90 you would have no problems and the solenoid is at the top.

Width is the problem here, looks like you measured the length there

, but yeah, it looks like I have the largest starter motor. It works fine with my ethos of trying the worst case scenario or cheapest readily available parts first, seeing if they work then either finding a better susbstitute or making them fit regardless.

is your engine install differant to this? it maybe the engine postion you have is giving you more problems with the clearance issues.
you wont get much more clearance with another starter motor, you can struggle with header clearance issues.

This is a 2000 shell, being retrofitted with the rover v8. OK, I hear everyone saying why not start with a v8 shell, but most of them are rotten or overpriced and completely unsuitable for the project I have in mind:
