Most obvious one, would be the clutch isnt releasing ?

Or if it feels ok.....dodgy gear linkage or something ?

Perhaps clutch needs bled.

Can you engage gears with the engine off?

Sounds like what happened when I fitted a v8 to my series 3. Have you taken the little cover off the bellhousing on the front of the gearlever to see what the clutch is doing? Does the clutch pedal get solid by the time it reaches the floor?

I found that my release arm was not being pushed far enough forward by the slave cylinder because it was hitting inside the bellhousing. I guess this is because the adapter ring is desingned for the older crash box which has a boss on the clutch diaphragm. I had to pull the engine back out again, and make the release arm pivot about half inch longer to get the clutch to work and select all gears. Hope this helps.

was going to take inspection cover off yesterday but it p***ed down all day. can get reverse with engine off but it`s a hard fight, thought it might be something to do with the release bearing not travelling far enough forward.

oh well, engine out again !!

thank
