Mk1 Granada axle help

Post by jamied36 »

:D Hi everyone am new to this forum am looking for some advise regarding axle choice for my Mk1 Granada saloon. At the moment the car is running a Cosworth 24v engine and mt75 5 speed gearbox with a ex Granada police car diff which is a borg warner lsd with a 4/1 ratio.I have just purchased a Shaun Hyland motosport 32v v8 Mustang Cobra engine thats been stroked to 5.0cc along with a Tremec gearbox all new .The engine is rated at 420 bhp plus 400ibs torque.I use my car mainly as a weekend showcar i do about 2000 miles a year in it but may be tempted to a couple runs up the strip once this new engine is installed.Do you think my Granada lsd can handle this or should i be looking at a stronger set up and if so what should i go for taking into account ease of insterlation etc plus cost? many thanks Jamie

If you are doing about 2K a year, I would run it until it grinds itself to bits, I recon on that milage you will get 5 or 6 years out of it. If it is going to go with a bang it would be at the strip, again I wouldn't change it until it is broaken, why spend money when you don't have to.
Best regards

My Mk1 Estate 5.8l is still running the original (non-lsd) axle and it's still hanging in there "just". Not as much BHP or Torque as the Cobra engine though.

I'd agree with kiwicar, run it till you break it, with the lsd fitted I reckon your more likely to knock out the CV joints on the halfshafts or twist the halfshafts than break the actual diff.

All depends on how heavy you are with your right foot :D

Your CV joints and shafts will break before the diff does.

Stevieturbo - if you don't mind me asking what rear end are you running in your Mk2?

I was breaking them with the old RV8 engine ( twin turbo mind, but even still )

The CV's broke even when being abusive on the road, on road tyres.
