Given a petrol engine is about 33% efficient, that means that 2MegaWatts of heat are being generated. There is absolutely no way that the cooling system is going to get rid of it, so the entire engine is going to heat up _very_ rapidly.

A lot are fully ceramic coated in and out, so a shitload of heat is passing out the tailpipe instead of soaking into the engine bay.
Pleny of skylines and such making crazy figures down here, even a RB30DET in a 70's Fairlady Z doing 7 secs down the 1/4 mile in STREET LEGAL trim.
As to the block weight, only the RB30 is cast nodular iron all the others RB 20, 25, 26 are all cast ductile iron, lighter and thinner, the RD28 diesel is an RB30 block with a thicker bore and shorter stroke crank.
