hiya all,
question is....
running in oil....or normal oil + break in additive.
For the initial start up and running of a 4.6 engine???
need to make a decision...but the subject of oil is a big question.

I had the same worries when I built my 4.6, I posted up on the Cobra forum and got a few suggestions in the end I stuck Valvoline VR1 20-50 in it to run it in. I still run with it now. (Not the same oil, I did change it!)Seight-V8 wrote:hiya all,

I know where your coming from but some bods on the cobra forum pointed out that the inital startup put the most strain on the bearings and the cam even when you prime the system, during this time why would you want to put a low quality oil in it and risk wiping out a cam etc. (You still need to use cam lube whatever oil you use)
What you should not do is run it on a synthetic oil as the rings won't bed in.
VR1 is quite expensive considering that you will though it away after a 100 miles or so but in the end I bunged it in anyway.
In fact I went to extreme lengths during my first start up.
I primed the system then rotated the crank 1/2 a turn and primed the system again, I repeated this for 2 full turns of the crank.
I filled the sump before I fitted the valley gasket, I used a funnel so that I could direct the oil away from the cam lobes, this was to prevent the oil washing the cam lube off the cam.
I ran the cam in for 25 minute in two sessions, at around 2K RPM, during this time my mate sprayed the rad with a hosepipe to keep the temperature around 70 degrees.
The motor was fired up with the coolant cap off, the coolant was topped up as the level dropped, as soon as it would not take anymore the cap was fitted.
You can see that really 3 people are needed to carry out the above.
I spent ages building this motor, there was no way that I was going to knacker it with a dodgy start up!

When my 4.6 was built, Penrite "running in" oil was used for the first 700km.
The oil is a 20w-50 specification with additional quantities of the necessary ZDDP to ensure that the camshaft runs in properly.
The distributor was removed, the magic wand used on the end of a drill to run the pump and run the oil throughout the engine, refitted and away we go.

bugger,
its all fitted on the engine now
looks like a bit of cranking over me thinks,
it will still pump up wont it?
how about if i pour a some oil into the pump so it has something to work on?
i use to use vaseline on the old dizzy driven pumps,

Otherwise there is another trick about squirting oil up the oil filter housing.
Here it is:
Drain the oil and unscrew the oil filter
Take a small bottle with a pipe that connects to the top of the bottle
Fill the bottle with oil and stick the pipe into the threaded part of the pump that the oil filter screws into.
Squeeze the bottle and press oil into the pump.
After some time oil will come out of the other hole of the filter mounting.
Keep squeezing for 20 seconds
Replace the pre-filled oil filter and top up the oil
Start the engine and check for oil pressure and then for leaks.
