Ah, yes, but with the RV8, a failed head gasket will not necessarily give any problems with the cooling system. If you look at how the coolant flows between block and head, it just runs up at the back of the block, and has a small breather at the front. Look at a picture of the block and you'll see what I mean.

I have had two engines with a mysterious ticking noise, and both of them had a failed tin head gasket......

Chris.

Damn, you've got me worried now!

It does sound very "valve-trainy" when you're up close to the engine though. Just hoping I've found a duff lifter- any thoughts on the loose pushrod?

Thanks again

I bolted the rocker shaft & cover back on and the same noise is now 100 times louder! (maybe because the oil hasn't reached the top to lubricate?)

Think I've pinpointed the problem as a bad lifter or something thereabouts. Just going to take it to a garage. My mechanic mate is away on holiday which is bloody annoying but I know the guy there so hopefully it won't cost a fortune, wish me luck...

* Quietened back down to how it was before. Mechanic was convinced its the tappets but won't do them without changing the cam as well which is a good call I guess (I'm just bloody skint at the moment, would be happy to bodge and do properly later). Will update the outcome, cheers
