relocating the Alternator & trigger sensor

Post by chodjinn »

I've seen a few people who locate their alternator to the bottom nearside of the engine, rather than the usual top offside. Is there a specific mount for this or is it custom?

Reason I ask is that I'm having to rethink my entire engine bay layout as I'm changing my inlet manifold and possibly intercooler as i have way too much pipework, but can't make it work without moving the alternator!!!

cheers

Olly,

I'm not sure but i thought the SD1 mounted the alternator down on the right hand side but don't think it will work in a MGB, you may have more room with the mods to the inner wings. I know I have seen pics of one in that position.

Belts are easy, the number printed on the belts are the metric length, so all you have to do is measure the length of the route your belt will take , minus a little and go down to your local motor spares, quote the length, and thats what you will get

yeah that's the sort of thing, but I've found a guy that'll do them for £18 so half the price of pop browns!

SD1's mounted the alternator top left of engine, looking at the front.

Right, the main problem I can see with moving my alternator is figuring out where to put the trigger sensor and bracket, because at the moment it is right in the way of where the belt would go. How can I change the position of the sensor etc. without messing things up???

I may be completely wrong regarding your car but the trigger sensor on sd1 v8 efi is only there for diagnostic use so unless you are using the hall effect impulses to drive your system/tacho whatever, can it be ditched? You will see from the diag that the output goes only to the test socket.

sorry should have been clearer, the sensor for the 36-1 crank trigger for the megasquirt. There's a photo of it in my project blog thingy, i need to make a new mount anyway, but the belt will defo be in the way if i move the alternator down there.

Olly,

If you mount the trigger wheel on the back of the pully and get a proper rover specific sensor bracket from trigger wheels you should not have a problem, about £14 from memory.

sweet, didn't know they did those! Already got the trigger wheels kit apart from the mount. Just removed the alternator for a trial fit and it looks like it will fit, just! Phew

Here's the one I made, to fit a Fiesta alternator, but if you can buy a suitable one for £18 I'd not waste a whole day fabbing something up.
