Grab a matching coil / distributor from a Range Rover, preferably amp-on-distributor-body type. Then the coil +ve just needs an unballasted 12V supply, and the coil -ve will drive the rev counter.

The 35d8 belongs the early front cover so using a newer electronic distributor will need the newer front cover. A luminition kit is probably the easiest way to convert this setup to electronic. It isn't what I would call cheap though at around £140. If you were to change the front cover and dizzy it could cost less and you would get a better oil pump in the bargain but it is more work.

Yes, the quickest and easiest is to buy and install a Lumenition kit.

Remove the points and capacitor, fit an optical eye and chopper, and mount the power module down low, away from heat, and if possible in an air stream.

Lumenition makes kits specific to different Lucas distributors, although it is my understanding that the power module in most cases is the same.

Hello Andy,

Was your Lucas 35d8 distributor out of a Rover P6B?

From my understanding, there were a number of subtle variations to the 35d8 distributors fitted to the P6Bs over the years of production, covering the rate and total amount of mechanical advance, and the points when the vacuum advance would start and finish, plus the total advance that it provided.

In any case, the Lumenition system is the same for all of them.

The power module is PMA50, the optical eye kit is FK114, and the chopper is a 299 usually.

Using a Lumenition kit does not change the rate of mechanical or vacuum advance.

The number 41487 is the type of 35d8 distributor, with corresponding rates of mechanical and vacuum advance. The other may well be a Lucas casting number or similar.

The important two numbers are...the model 35d8, and the type 41487.

Is the vacuum advance still working?

Hope this helps,
Ron.

Ran a Lumenition most successfully in the V8 Mini, well up to the point the optical sensor came adrift in the dizzy and knocked off a lobe on the plastic chopper

Ran a bit funny on the way home with one pot not sparking, and the ECU not quite getting the right number of ignition events :D
