JSF55 wrote:Thats definetly a Borg Warner 65 or 66 box, u can tell by the servo's on the side of the box, an almost direct replacement would either be the GM180 again a 3 speed box, or the zfhp22 as chris recomeds, in fact i don't think there's that much diffrence in length, just a much larger bellhousing, photos on my webshots if u need a look, john

Thanks John... I took a look at your pictures. Excellent sequence of pics. The bellhousing doesnt look that much bigger... I dont suppose you would know anywhere on www that lists dimensions of gearboxes and housings..?

Hey Snake!
I reckon the 350 will be smaller than the box you have there mate. I'll dig out the actual dimensions shortly.

Hiya, yep took a look.. theres 3 different lengths... (roughly) 28" 31" or 34" because of the 3" 6" or 9" tailshaft... Which have you got..?

And what does small, wide and double bolt pattern mean..?

Can you post or send me a picture..? It has the conversion plate..what else is included..? What type of torque converter has it got..?

Thanks..............Bazza :)

I'm not back home until Monday or tuesday. But when I get back I'll do some pics and a sketch with actual dimensions on.
The torque converter is a new Holeshot 2800. 10 inch diameter. You will probably want a bigger converter with a much lower stall speed for your trike though.

The ZF4HP22 is long. I dont' have dims, but you can get the idea from:

http://www.cowdery.org.uk/zf.php

The normal 2WD tailcone (without speedo drive from Volvo/BMW/ etc) is shorter than the 2WD Sherpa tailcone (which does have the speedo drive)

Hi Chris, cheers for that.. what a dude  that clutch looks very much like a modern motorcycle wet multiplate clutch.. the ZF seems like a good idea with all the different options that go with it, although lm a bit worried by the size of the sump on it... any idea if there are options on the sump..?

Thanks........Bazza :)

Hiya, lm just starting to understand the options on auto boxes... l wouldnt mind a box that doesnt let me move immediately, but waits a second as the revs rise, then...GO !!! This element is the stall speed...yes ? My trike creeps in drive with no throttle and can be annoying...especially when its cold and needs some throttle to keep the motor running. What difference does the diameter make..?

Thanks.....Bazza :)

Creep can be annoying Baz.
Mine does not creep at idle, well hardly at all anyway.
All convertors will transmit a bit of drive at idle. The heavier the vehicle, the less you notice it. The stall speed is the rpm at which the convertor goes to full lock up so you get max drive to the box.
But the higher the stall speed, the lower the mpg goes for road use.
I think around 1700 rpm's is a common stall speed for road use.

There are sump options on the ZF - the sump that I have is a Range Rover sump (LDV just took a Range Rover box as it was already sorted for the V8 and made it 2WD). It's a massive sump because of course the Range Rover has to operate at silly angles and still have a good oil feed.

The car versions have a much smaller sump.

I'll try to pop into the garage tomorrow as I have a Volvo box, (i.e. 2WD, small sump, shortest tailcone, but not a V8 bellhousing). I'll endeavour to remember to measure it too!

The creep at idle is a tricky one - a fuel injected engine is your friend!, (but of course it won't look the same). The other option is LPG because that doesn't need all this choke / fast idle business. My Landie ticks over so slowly when cold that the tacho doesn't register!

Thanks very much, I'd really appreciate that... Do you know if the different tailcones and sumps are readily available..? As Ive just located a ZF but with the 4x4 tail and sump...

I think I'll just have to live with the creep at tickover...Its a relatively small problem that is possible to live with..

I've added a pic and some notes to the bottom of this page:

http://www.cowdery.org.uk/zf.php

I would say that getting bits & bobs would now take a fair bit of scrapyard hunting as it's been a fair few years since any 2WD cars had that box as standard.....

I had mine out of a 2.8 jag, i think non sports model, came in handy as it bolted straight up to my original propshaft, sump sits at a slight angle, but nothing to worry about, as for the torque convertor, ideal it needs to be of a smaller dia to produce a higher stall speed this in return should shift the take up point a little higher up from the tick over speed, have a read here :-

So thats where it went !
