Sheared lower right long water pump bolt on RV8

Post by al mackenzie »

:(
I've sheared the lower right long water pump bolt on the '72 3.5 out of my P6B. It has broken off a couple of mm into the water pump casing. How do I get the remainder of the long bolt out now?
Grateful fur any advice gentlemen.

Do you mean it is broken off on the thread inside the casting it screws into? If so you might have to do the old accurately-used-small-drill trick and work up in size until you can pick the remains of the thread out. Or use an Eazyout once you have a hole drilled in it.

Sometimes you can weld a nut over the broken stump and unscrew it like a normal bolt, but it sounds like yours may have sheared too far in for that.

If its one of the long ones, it will go right thru to the block, so it may be a case of taking off the timing cover and getting a pair of grips near the root of the bolt, a good soaking of WD40, and TIGHTEN the bolt slightly before undoing it, It shouldent be a problem

Thanks gentlemen. It is one of the long ones, the lower right long one. So I have to remove the timing cover then? What about drilling it (yeah, it is snapped inside the threaded bit, not proud) and using one of those reverse-threaded thingamyjigs (can't remember what they're called)?

Take the cover off, the bolt is too long to drill out easly,, neither feasable to use an easyout in this situation
