Pete - thanks for the spreadsheet - works a treat! Anyway, went for a longer run today and the car is still a little lean running with the 83 65-52 set-up, so I'll take it another step richer to 86 67-55 (Pete - your original - point 6 on the 1404 cal chart) and then see how it runs and maybe then l...

Alex, If you have enough under bonnet room then I would seriously consider fitting a phenolic spacer between the carb and manifold, I found when the carb gets very hot the idle gets erratic, I think the fuel is actually boiling in the float chambers. Kevin Yep - did that when building the engine fo...

I had a little play this afternoon and changed the rods to 6552 - essentially 1 stage richer both in power and cruise (according to the Edelbrock manual - position 11 on the 1404 cal chart compared to the previous setting of position 10). Anyway, the car run much better at lower speeds particularly ...

Bugger - I don't have 86 jets.

So for now, I'll do a rod change to 63-47 and see how that goes with the 83 jets.

Weather permitting, I'll update tomorrow...

Thanks folks - I'll change the primaries to .086" to see what that does. Certainly one side of the car is running leaner than the other due to purple exhausts, so it's clearly running hotter - again, the mixture screws need playing with also to try and balance this out. I have thought about upp...

The idle jets appear clean (the carb is brand new out of box), but I have checked anyway. Also, no whistling that I can detect. Because I didn't write it down, I used a process of elimination from my carb calibration kit and have fitted the following rods and primary jets: Rods: (.067" x .055&q...

Idling query

I've recently been running my Rush on the road now I'm through SVA and have noticed some odd idling / running characteristics as follows: The motor is a 3.5 RV8 with Edelbrock 500 and dual plane Edelbrock manifold. 1. When the car is fully warmed up and I go out of gear, sometimes the engine idles a...

Thanks folks - this weekends job then. I'll pass the oil through some filter paper with petrol to see what residue I'm left with.

I'm using Halfords classic motor oil - 20W50 I think.

Oil change?

I've been runnning my rebuilt 3.5 RV8 and have covered 300miles. As it's the first oil in the engine, should I be changing it now, or cover some more miles ?

Thanks

I think I might be able to take a closer look with the box still in the car - it will mean taking out the carpets / centre tunnel, but then I can disconnect the prop and probably take the back of the box off without the need to remove the lump. The thing that pi$$es me off the most is the box is the...

The box is a recon, so I wouldn't know how the seal was fitted. It came from a reputable box supplier, so I believe it to be a good job..but you never know. Guess I'll keep topping the box up for now and when it's time for an engine rebuild / upgrade, I'll whip the whole lot out and take a good look...

Chris,

Yes I believe the breather to be working correctly - is there any easy way to check without removing engine/box from the car ?

Leaky R380

I have a recon R380 box in my DAX Rush. In the garage on axle stands, drive the car fine - no leaks, no matter how fast the wheels spin. Drive it on the road and floor it, and oil drips out of the back of the box - clearly due to it surging toward the back under acceleration. I am guessing it's comi...

Well it's been a little while, but I've finaly finished the car and got it through SVA. The drive is absolutely superb and the noise is the Dogs B's I tell you ! There's many fettling jobs to do now, so more questions will be posted over the coming weeks as I fine tune things Thanks for the answers ...

The pipes were made and supplied by DAX. Basically a straight through system, no CAT with some wadding in the 5" bore section running along the length of the car. They sound fantastic - I blipped up to 5,000 on the weekend and the neighbours came out ! Not cheap though and bit of a bugger to fi...
