ZF4HP engine rpm/shift points
I’ve a 4.6 Rover (carb not efi) and a 4.6 Range Rover ZF4HP22 with 24 internals & oil pump with the largest of the 3 torque converters and it’s converted to 2WD with Jaguar bits. I don’t know the diff ratio but 5500rpm in locked up 4th is 118mph according to a run on a rolling road. I don’t have...

Re: Rover engine mount rubbers
Thanks for the reply but they look like the ones I already have - I expect there’s a difference in the stiffness of the rubber between suppliers but that’s not something you can tell until they’re fitted. Yes, I found the polyurethane ones on here but unfortunately they’re different and would need n...

Re: Rover engine mount rubbers
Thanks for that, those sort of things look ideal and even better, they’re something I can make instead of buying.

Rover engine mount rubbers
My 4.6 has p6 style round engine mounts and it does wobble a bit (no bodywork so I can see it moving) but didn’t touch anything. But, when I swapped the LT77 for a ZF automatic the engine had to go forwards a little and now the nearside head sometimes hits the chassis. I could alter the mounting bra...

Re: Rover V8 4.6 fit top hats or not
Go for top hats.
Liner slippage on 4.6 engines is well known especially if it’s been overheated and top hats don’t slip.
When rebuilding my 4.6 they’re what I used.

Re: Rover exhaust thread repair
Yes, studs are definitely preferable but there isn’t room to turn nuts or bolt heads on my exhausts hence I’m using cap head bolts. However I have a cunning plan to make 16 off 3/8” UNC internally threaded tubes the same O/D as the cap heads and screw a cap head into one end so I can do them up on s...

Re: ZF4HP fluid level
The box came with the stick and tube so I have to assume the builder used a matching set? It isn’t a RR sump but something shallower for ground clearance and the tube screwed in so I’ve used the level markings on the stick - the 22 and 24 cases are similar so I’d have thought the fluid level would b...

Removing Stromberg carb needles
A friend's bought a Rover V8 trike with twin Strombergs and it doesn't run properly because not only has someone filed two huge great flats down each needle but they haven't even made the flats the same on each needle either so we're trying to get the needles out. I don't know if this is relevent to...

Re: Rover exhaust thread repair
Cheers for the replies, I've ordered a 3/8" UNC kit. They look easy enough to use as long as the drill goes in straight so I think I'll knock up a fixture to guide the drill - a thick lump of mild steel with a hole for the drill and a hole to bolt it to the other exhaust port thread should do it.

Re: Rover V8 Engine Numbers Updated:
Is the link to the updated list on page 2 not working? A friend has bought a trike and the engine number & compression ratio stamped on the pad by the dipstick is 26G00008B and 8.13:1, the list on page 1 goes up to 24G for 1983 on LandRover 90/110 cr 8.31:1 and starts again at 27G for 1989 Disco...

Rover exhaust thread repair
I’ve stripped an exhaust manifold thread in the head and am wondering about what’s the best/least worst way of repairing it. I’ve been using cap head bolts because of clearance problems so it looks like a helicoil is needed or is there a better way? The engine is uncovered so access is dead easy if ...

Re: ZF4HP fluid level
I did wonder about that but can’t think what I might have sucked/blown away and where did it go? The vent bit that sticks up out of the box does go up and down on mine, I don’t know if it’s supposed to but maybe it closes off if it’s stuck up or down?
But as you say, it’s a result!

Re: ZF4HP fluid level
I pulled the dipstick, put a 1 litre syringe on the vent pipe and heard gurgling from the dipstick tube as I pushed air in and out so the vent doesn’t seem blocked. It was hot weather so I went for a run around town in the traffic (slow speed so the tc didn’t lock) to get the gearbox hot, got back h...

Re: ZF4HP fluid level
Cheers for the replies Chris, I’ll see about checking the breather tomorrow - I can’t think of another reason why ATF is coming out of the kickdown cable by the carb and not out of the breather. I’ve done some searching and it looks like I’ve been checking the fluid level wrongly too, apparently the...

Re: ZF4HP fluid level
The simplest way to install the cooler looked to be putting it behind the carb about the same level as the rocker boxes, it keeps the pipes short and with the engine being completely open there’s good airflow too. It didn’t occur to me at the time but being that high up, is fluid in the cooler likel...
