Oil pump housing in timing cover

Post by Coops »

my oil pump housing in the front timing cover is scored on the side walls, can i gently wet and dry this back to make it a bit smoother? or will it cock up my oil pressure????
im going to order some new gears, as these are scored also (4yrs old now)

yes M8 the scores on the side wont damage the new gears as they don't actually tough. The really bad news is when the top or bottom is badly scored. Just a thought but the new pump gasket isn't too thick is it?

Could you not go for an intermediate serpentine setup? A whole new cover with crank driven oil pump isn't terribly expensive.

Of course the cost of all the other bits soon mounts up... ;)

Mine had high sharp spots on the walls as if it had something nasty through it chewing it up. I gently sanded those off, but didn't polish the scoring out.

if the oil pump face is too scored too spray glue a 400 grit wet and dry down to a block of wood and rub it up and down

but you probably knew that anyway lol

I've first hand experiance of this. The first time i rebuilt a v8 and put in my capri i had very low oil pressure, enough to make me really worry (despite the warnings that they have uber low pressure at hot idle) so i rebuilt the pump with new gears and a remote filter (that came with a new and improved base) but when i put the new base on i noticed the gasket that came with it was silly thin compared with the one i originally used and once it was running again with the new base and gasket the oil pressure was decently high but the only big difference between the two was the gasket.

Ever since i've not used a gasket and only used liquid stuff. In doing this i've never had and pump gear to pump base interface problems and superb oil pressure.

Just a liquid gasket cleverly and carefully applied. My pump gears still clear the base when using this however a friends pump gears locked up when we did the same to his. . . . .

The thin gasket i had and used that time though i got from Paul at v8 tuner, it came with the mocal remote filter and base i used so it could well have come from mocal with it rather than paul adding it into the kit.
