mgb v8 4.6 Dyno report

Post by BISH V8 »

Today at CASTLE COOMBE Circuit motors we had 2 mgb v8 4.6 lts
timed and power dyno run to find hp and torque
First mgb with standard trim of rover 4.6 with heads slightely cleaned/polished gave a engine bhp of 236 with a torque of 291, first run only gave 203 bhp but with some fine tuning it ran to its final fiqure of 236 bhp..
2nd mgb v8 4.6 which has had alot more work done in the engine area and using Mark rawlins (V8BLOKE) old self ported stage three heads gave a final fiqure of 294.3 bhp on at 5541 rpm,max power at wheels was 258.6 bhp at 5160 rpm, maximum torque was 310.9 lbft at 4295 rpm..
Before it went into timing there was quite a bit of pinking going on,the engine had quite high compression of 11.3 ... the guys were great and had the pinking totally gone by the third run,if i had a better fuel than the shell power they could have got more bhp but im afraid this was not to be.. Im a very happy person as mark rawlins used these heads in 2008 and on his dyno sheet he had max power was 294.2 bhp with torque of 301.2..
One thing this has proved is that both mgb v8 4.6 used the same rolling road today,it gave two different results, one as standard the other with modifications, it shows that rover heads can get good bhp if the work is done....

what fine tuning was done, thats a fair change in power - was timing way out?

Good results!

You've beaten my 4.6 although it was ages ago that I had it dynoed, I think that its knocking out a fair bit more now. 285 BHP at 5500 RPM last time it was on the rollers. (My CR was only around 9.5:1 at the time!)

The first MGB the timing was all over the place, lets just say at one stage the manifolds were glowing red hot....... A bit of guess work to get it to the rolling road..
