Rebuild/service kits for SU HD8 carbs, and rejetting?

Post by chodjinn »

Hey, I was wondering if anyone knew a good (cheap!) place to get a couple of service kits for some SU HD8 (I think) carbs?

Secondly, I'm looking at fitting either a 3.5 or 3.9 with the carbs. They have previosuly been used on both but jetted for 3.5 as far as I know, so how hard is it / what needs doing to rejet them to suit a 3.9?

And finally, anyone know a good place to get them set up once rebuilt, I'm in the NW.

Thanks!

Burlen Fuel Systems (good but not the cheapest)

Rejetting: only needles should need changing.

I know of Burlen but they are really expensive and the website isn't the easiest to use, I can't find service kits only rebuild kits. Are service kits really around £43 each?! (that's the best I oculd find using google for ten mins).

You might be able to get a refurb kit from a Jaguar specialist. I got mine from Burlen, and didn't worry about the cost.

I used Pete Baldwin to rolling road mine, but he's near Cambridge. He does know his stuff though.

There's nothing to service on an SU, IMHO, you just repair what's needed, after a good clean.

I don't think their prices too bad considering the quantities they re-manufacture. Different if they were made by the million.

A gasket or 2, "O" ring on some models and float valve, I've done some but tbh I only bothered changing the valves because I had new ones- they always look perfect!

As Dave said a good clean will do 90% of the job.

Thanks for the advice guys. Unfortunately something has come up with my other motor that is more pressing so this'll be on hold for a month or two. Will give them a good clean with carb cleaner since I'm skint and see how I fair with that!

thanks as always!

I have a Burlen catalogue somewhere. Do you have the alloy tags with carb ID code attached to the carbs ? I could scan you the relevant pages with part numbers.
