Insurance

Post by Crazy »

I was just wondering how many of you guys have fun with insuring cars where you've dropped a V8 into them when they didn't have them at factory?

I will guess I'm probably one of the youngest members on here at 23 so I was expecting insurance to be a bomb on my Volvo 940 with the 3.5 RV8 conversion, but it's actually LOWERED my insurance!!!!

I guess with some of the older members your insurance doesn't cost much, so you don't worry about it, but I've found that if you do an engine and tranny change away from factory set up, your car is then classed by DVLA as "radically altered" and can get kit car insurance :D

Normal insurance for me on a 2.3 turbo Volvo 940 (with 3 points and 0NCD) = £700
Normal insurance for me on a 3.5 RV8 Volvo 940 (with 6 points and 1NCD but a £4k claim last year) = £5000
Kit car insurance for me on a 3.5 RV8 Volvo 940 (with 6 points and 1NCD but a £4k claim last year) = £350

Any of you guys had similar experiences??

Got to be close to "classic" age? I have no problem insuring a TR7 V8 with Heritage, agreed value if you send in some photographs. Limited mileage but under 100quid full comp, same with the Monza (no engine swap, yet!).
I think there are probably some statistics which state if you spend hours working on a car you will drive it carefully. Insurance companies work on figures!

what you havent realised yet is it will be slower with the v8

and the fuel economy will either make you drive it like an old woman or leave it at home= lower insurance risk

Hahaa, everyone says it'll be slower with the V8, but the it's more hp and much more torque than the 2.3 turbo had, cos I had the more unusual low pressure turbo model :( Also, the Volvo engine is stupidly heavy!!!

But right now, the Volvo don't go at all, so even a 2CV engine would make it faster

As for fuel economy, how much worse than 17mpg can it be?
