SD1 Clutch problem

Post by v8trev »

Hi, wonder if someone can answer this for me please:

I have a Discovery engine fitted with an SD1 flywheel and clutch to which I will be attaching an LT77 box.

My problem is that the clutch release bearing which I presume is the earlier non-self centreing type does not fit the clutch release fork which I am assurred came from an SD1. I suspect the release fork I have is from the later self centreing type clutch hence the incompatability. Can anyone confirm if this is so from the pics below?

Presumeably I need the earlier release fork?

Alternatively if I get the later bearing to go with the later release fork I already have will these work with the earlier plate and disc.

Hope that all makes sense.

many thanks

Fork is correct, bearing is correct - you are missing the big cast iron bearing carrier (or later plastic version of it). The bearing presses onto the nose of the carrier.

Check the picture here:-

In fact compare the two clutch kit pictures in the listing - the self centring one shows the plastic carrier and bearing, the older non self centring picture shows the bearing only. You are missing the iron equivalent bit of the black plastic bit in the picture (if that makes any sense!).

Thanks Russ.

As the bearing carrier does not seem to be available any more will the later type self centreing bearing and carrier combined work with the earlier non self centreing clutch cover?

Many thanks

No it won't.

The older pressure plate has flat release fingers wand a radius on the face of the bearing. The later clutch cover has a radius on the end of the fingers and a flat release bearing. Two flat faces together won't work, the fingers need to 'roll' across the bearing as it operates. You can just about see that in the two clutch kit pictures.

Unfortunately looks like you'll need a complete later kit unless you can find a scrap carrier - have you tried Jim Robinson, he normally has a stock of old parts for re-conning.

but to be honest I'd upgrade to the later type self centring bearing and cover at that price.

Hi again Russ,

Have to confess to be a little confused (it's not unusual . . .)

You say the bearing & carrier combined in the first ebay listing linked above is the one I need for the earlier non self centring clutch, but the listing states that it is 'self centring' ???
