Transverse gearbox strong enough for big block / RV8???

Post by V8James »

Hi all

Does anyone know of any manual gearboxes that would cope with big block power + torque?

It wont be used in a usual front wheel drive application but i need that type of box

Failing that what transverse box would be ok with approx 300bhp RV8?

Cheers
James

If it is up to about 550 bhp and about 450 ftlb torque then the Renault 25 turbo box can be beefed up to this level, it needs a new input shaft and a beefed up and bearings around 5th gear, one of the gt40 kit makers do kits, I'll have a hunt later (unless Ian Anderson knows off the top of his head).
The Audi ally case 5 speed (same one as the Porsche boxter but if it says Porsche it costs about £750 more) is good for about 50 less but also can be beefed up to about the same (I have one for my SBC)
the six speed for the 2 WD 3.7 diesel Audi A8 is meant to be able to handle 500 but are not easy to get in the UK ftlb and the boxter S version about 450 or so.
The Porsche G50 series are good up to around 600 bhp if cooled suitably (but only 500-550 ftlb) and need to be in good condition. the early 911 boxes are much weaker.
Then there are 5 and 6 speed Quaif boxes, rated for big numbers (850 bhp and 750 ish ft lb) and a few ZFs similar but a bit less torque. and then you get to hewland boxes, the highest rated would handle a racing big block.
As for transverse boxes the one for the 2.5 litre rover 5 speed and pugeot diesel 6 speed are good for about 600 bhp 450-500 ft lb if in good nick.
With a tuned big block you will be looking at spending big money on a transmission £5k to £7.5k by you have reconditioned it and beefed it up, even a low tune one you will be in for £2.5k by it is reconditioned and modified, the torque is the killer, a 300bhp big block will have over 450 ft lb of torque
