MGB IRS
Does anyone know of any plans on the net or anywhere to build my own mgb IRS subframe that I can build and then bolt on over a weekend without having the car off the road for too long.
This is to rectify my whining axle problem. Haven't got a spare 3000+ for one of the kits and dont want to do any alterations to the car because I need it on the road and dont have time to do any big jobs to it like that.
Would use sierra diff and drive shafts probably, I imagine they are quite cheap from a scrappies and there are a few about. I could build the subframe at my leisure, then just switch it over in one weekend. Thats the plan anyway.
Any suggestions?

The only stuff I ever found regarding IRS + MGBs was the Hoyle Engineering or Costello stuff. There was a website going where a guy had modified a Jag IRS, but there was a lot of work involved. Only other website I found was building your own 4-link kit for a solid axel.
The sierra diff won't be as cheap as you think. Driveshafts will require to be shortened anyway, unless running a Sebring kit. Nearly half the cost of the Hoyle set up comes from all the extra parts that are required. IIRC its about £1700 for the IRS kit (frames etc.), then another £1500 for bits. I'm sure Hoyle has a list of what bits are required on their website:

Sorry but if you want to do it your way it looks like you'll have to start from scratch, as I doubt Hoyle will sell you a set of plans lol . . .
Either way, not an easy or quick job

yeah that's the guy!
I found a place oop north that do complete Jag IRS units from as little as £150.
Think I got a quote for £250 for the diff ratio I wanted, and including powerlock. Think they were called Jag Axel Supplies? - no hang on they were the people who were gonna supply recon parts. I believe they do a complete recon IRS for £1600+
When I was looking at it with another guy, we reckoned £1000-1200 depending on what you needed to replace, including all machine/shortening work etc. and fitting to the MGB, polybushed all round with new disc brakes and coilovers. Still not bad compared to the Hoyle cost.

Any idea roughly what needs doing to the body work. I have found some pics on the net. From what i can see it looks like a section of rear chassis leg is removed and a new piece made that is higher up to bridge something, presumably the top wishbones. Have seen somewhere that the Jag is 10" wider than mgb axle so will need to shorten stuff, even with the sebring arches but i'm not worried about that too much. More concerned with the finding solid pieces to bolt it to.
