timing chain tension

Post by Ralphh85 »

is it normal for the timing chain to be pretty slack?

do no rover v8's have tensioners? been pulling apart the engine im going to rebuild and was surprised not to see one.

Hello Ralph,

None of the Rover V8 engines were ever fitted with tensioners for the timing chain. I imagine that it was deemed not necessary.

The original morse type chains and their nylon toothed timing wheel wear very rapidly indeed althoough the one in my original 3.5 lasted 203,000 miles (327,000km). It didn't fail luckily, but it could have.

The later steel sets are vastly better not to mention the double row true roller sets which are the bee's knees.

I had a JP duplex chain fitted and this was rubbish.
The wheels are ok, but the chain was far too long after, let´s say, 40000km.
I changed back to original items.
