high pressure oil pump

Post by Black Dog »

20 odd years ago i remember having a vitesse with a high pressure oil pump, i seem to remember it had a different gauge in the dash and ran about 75 psi ( but i do have a bad memory) can you still buy them as i cant find 1 and is it such a good idea or will it hide possible problems ?

cheers for any comments

carefull of high pressure oil pumps, you can end up with a high wear rate on the distributor gears, high flow pumps are a good mod, but high pressure are worth avoiding.

Hi BD
The Rover uses a HVLP system and you should avoid too high a pressure.
You would be much better off using new gears and relief valve and a good base plate.
This will give you plenty of pressure in the system without causing harm to the motor.

I concur with the above :)

The RV8 oil system needs good clean oilways and a low pressure.
If you can run 20/50 and find 20-40 psi at cold idle. And 10-20 psi at hot idle with 35-40psi at 2000 rpm hot you aint doing too bad.

I fitted one of these high pressure pump kits to mine with the stronger spring etc.

This was when I was a RV8 virgin. I thought the 70-80 psi was cool :)

Then the car started misfiring after 4 runs on the 1/4mile. It took me a while to decide to take the dissy cap off and crank it over. The rotor arm ran for 3/4 of a turn then stopped. Then it would pick up again and go another 3/4 turn??

The aftermath was this....

yeah it was the COOL factor that had got me looking for another 1 but think i may be steering clear after your pic and everyone's advice.

my oil pressure is pretty much what you have described and i've had a couple that have run zero when on hot idle so i guess i will just be happy. Although i always youst to swear by Duckhams 20/50 but cant seem to get that round here anymore.

I use Halfords classic 20/50 in mine.
