RV8 - Dizzy drive dimensions

Post by adamnreeves »

After a favour. I am going to make a dizzy hole plug for my intermediate timing cover. For this I am going to copy the lower part of the dizzy.

Could someone take some measurements for me.

Essentially I require the measurements demonstrated in the photo below.

Hi,
If you cover the p/p, I'll send you an old distributor body, free of charge.
Might be easier to convert, rather than starting from scratch.

You only need a plug on the intermediate cover so why are you copying the whole bottom of the dizzy? You don't need to retain any of the oil pump drive so a circular bung with an o ring that fits the hole in the cover is all you need.

Yep thats what I intend on doing. I am not going to install the gears. I just want it to be an exact and neat fit.

Thanks to JRV8 sending the bottom part of the dizzy body. I pretty much replicated it as I know a man who has access to CNC milling.etc.

Look at this. I think if I were to get another one done I would have it bored out a little in the centre to save some weight, but fits very well and nice and shiny.

If anyone wants one done let me know!

Why did you make it so long? I cant see it serving any purpose other than say 10mm below the o ring and you wouldn't even need that much.

Looks good Adam.
I had one thought - do you need a section that sticks up so the dissy clamp can't move? You are using a clamp to hold it in aren't you?

Have you sourced your timing cover socket cap screws yet?

Oh dear. Looks like I might have to get another dizzy plug done then! I do not have the clamp and assumed (the mother of all c*ckps) that this part of the dizzy drive would not be needed. Looking at the one on Ebay looks like it does need it! I think I will get another one done and make shorter as katanman suggests. Also bore out to make a little lighter.

The UNC cap head screens I am failing to get hold off. I know I can get longer and cut down but I do not like doing that. I might just go for the OEM hex bolts.

I am assuming you will want my 2nd generation version!
I will get autocad going tonight and make some changes to my design and get some more made up.

I will submit the design here later so if anyone else wants one then let me know so that I can get a batch made if required.

I have worked on a second generation dizzy plug. I have not got a clamp but I know the dimensions from the dizzy but not knowing the height of the little bit on the top I have made it 10mm. It can always be cut down.

I am going to get two made, one for me and one for someone else, ihatesissycars can have first dibs. I will of course check it fits the cover first. Do not know how much it will be yet, but the last one cost me £15 and this one uses half the material.

All external edges will have a slight chamfer.

My dizzy drives the oil pump. Is there anyone making plugs with the oil pump drive?

Intermediate and later timing covers have the oil pump driven directly by the crank using a cresent pump built into the timing cover.
