Dowels for cylinder head/block sizes

Post by Paul V8 »

Hello again.

The new engine I'm building hasn't got any dowels in the block to locate the head, does anyone have the sizes of them so I can have some made.

Thanks

Pretty sure we made some from 1/4" rod. Just measure diameter using a drill bit and a caliper for the depth, leave enough space for air and make sure you have a healthy chamfer.

Just jam some suitably sized rod in the hole. I believe the dowels from Rimmer Bros that I bought were about 15 quid. Rip off! I see no reason for them to be case hardened as the normal items are.

1/4" is the measurement I have used for gasket cutting patterns (6.36mm for the gasket hole).

Hi Paul,

Just pop down to your local engineers merchant. Ask for blind hole dowels. They are threaded internally for easy removal & have a small flat on the side to let the air out when you push them in. Shouldn't be more than a quid each.

Hi Paul.
I needed some quick once and used the blunt end of a drill bit that fitted snug. I then cut the end off with a cutting disc and used the bits as dowels. Can't remember the size though.
