Drive shaft CV joint bolt linked washers?

Post by SuperV8 »

Hi,
I have a Dax Rush with Ford Sierra diff/drive shafts.

Originally when I built the car the washers that link two of the CV joint bolts together were rotten so not used.

I've been driving it with its supercharged 3.5V8 and has been fine. I'm fitting a supercharged 4.6V8 so obviously will have loads more torque. :D

Just rebuilt the diff and while i'm at it would it be worth finding these linked washers?

Does anyone else use these linked washers with their CV joint bolts?

All thoughts/opinions much appreciated.

Tom

Does the MOT man actually look at anything these days, apart from the number plate to decide what he can hit you for in repairs before you will decide it would be cheeper to scrap it and get another one.

I seem to remember ( but my memory is poor) that these washers have a serated surface at the underside of the caphead bolt and therefore act as lock washers.
Correct me if I am wrong.

Well just brought the ford cv bolt washers.

Expensive!! £1.50+vat x 12!

Thet're not even coated, just bare metal. They are quite thick though, 2mm.

They're actually called locking washer on the ford parts database. PN F1018715. although there are no serations.

I think they may just help to get a more consistent pre-load in the bolt?

Not sure what the washers are you are reffering to but for a real good washer that will always prevent anything coming undone use one of these http://www.nord-lock.com/[/url]

Thinking deeper on this one, the hardened cv joint material may be too hard to grab the bolt head and the washers allow some penetration/bite and therfore give a better lock. Just a thought!!!
