V8 90 3.5 efi Landy,cold idle problem

Post by Rob8271 »

Hi All,

New member having just purchased a Landy 90 with a 3.5 efi, year of vehicle is 89 though I'm guessing the motor is a few years younger.

Engine runs sweet and smooth with no problems at all except this.....

On starting from stone cold the fast idle takes an age to drop to normal tickover....?

Any idea where I should begin please?

Thanks
Rob

Hello and welcome
Assuming it is getting up to temperature in a sensable amount of time (ie someone hasn't removed the thermostat) then I would first check the temperature sender for the EFI is in spec (you will need a ohm meter and the specs out of a book), I am pretty sure on the rover this is not the same one that does the gauge in the dash. Next check the wiring from the sender back to the ECU look for damaged/ brittle wire and coroded connectors. Check the earth on the engine (though I would think you would see this manifest itself in other ways.
Bit stumped after that, but someone will be along in a minute who can help.
Best regards
Mike

What sort of injection is it, flapper or hotwire? First thoughts are have you a vaccum leak? If it is hotwire check stepper motor is functioning correctly and clean and lubricate while you have it out. Have had idle problems caused by the road speed transducer before, but hard to tell if you have one without knowing what injection you have.

Let us know and I expect you will get some more ideas to try.

Thanks for replies.....

I removed the air filter last night and started her again from cold, hey presto started perfectlt with revs dropping to normal within a couple of seconds...

Air filter was totally choked...

Would this have caused my symptoms?

Thanks,Rob.
PS its a hotwire!
