Ford 351 Windsor v8
Hi everyone
A very novice question but how much power/torque should I be excepting from a standard ford 351 Windsor V8. I am planning on taking both the engine and box out of a 3rd generation ford Econoline.
Could anyone also tell me how the 351 Windsor compares to the Chevy 350 for spares and reliability.
Due to the verity of boxes used with 3rd generation Econoline’s I am not yet sure what box I am likely to get (as I am yet to focus one a particular Econoline to buy)

It will largely depend on the year of manufacture and the specification.
As an example, the 351 as fitted into the Australian Ford Falcon built between 1973 and 1976 delivered 260bhp and 355 lbs/ft of torque where as the earlier version of 1969 delivered 290bhp and 385lbs/ft of torque.
The country in which you reside will also influence the specification and ease of obtaining spares. Which country are you in if I might ask?

Assuming you are in the UK then parts availability is down to whether or not you are going to import yourself or pay someone else to do it. At the moment it seems US parts suppliers are hurting, to that end parts are reasonably cheep and if you ask for sensable postal charges they actually try and fing the cheepest and not just the first one they come to.
Ebay will get you 95% of things, summit, Northern auto parts, comp cams, iskydine etc the rest, for your engine. There are alot of transmission specialists. if you want to just use UK suppliers then it is a little more limmited as you are relieing on who holds stocks of what but either way there are alot of bits available.

The 351 used in Aus Fords from 1971 - 1984 was a cleveland, same bore and stroke but different rod/stroke ratios and totally different heads, you cant compare that to a windsor.RoverP6B wrote:Hello Tom,

I guess you are talking an injected 351 here from the econoline, I dont have facts and figures to hand but some of the ford truck sites would have the specs for the different years. They will be slightly less hp than a car version but more torque.

And then if you do the correct mix of Cleveland and Windsor bits you get a very high power screamer of an engine

Not quite, a Boss 302 was clevo heads on a windsor block but the 351 Boss wa a clevo top and bottom.kiwicar wrote:351C V4heads on a 351W bottom end, ford Boss mustang I believe![]()

My 351 was a windsor bottom with 302clevo heads but 4v valves, if anything the 4v heads are too big in the ports. Used to be a budget build, mine cost over $14k NZ about 15yrs ago, many cheaper options now.

Hello a STD 351W will net you in the range in stock trim prox 170 to 200 BHP.... the biggest bang for your pound would be to stroke your Windsor.... crank kits are now CHEBBIE priced and new allly heads are Chebbie priced.. and you can cheaply achive 375 to 400 BHP on a Chebbie budget... The Windor is a very reliable performance engine... right up there with the good O'll Chevy 350.... and with a bonus the Windsor is a tade lighter... Not stroke'n your Windsor on a budget with a few perf parts..eg cam & up the comp , add ally heads & good intake would net you 300 to 350 prox BHP.Tom.H wrote:Hi everyone
