I think it is much easier to take the cover off, but I don't see why you have to?

Maybe you could get some self tappers to grip on the seal and pull it out?

I'd certainly give it a try!

As long as you can get the ballencer off without damaging it as you must not pull it off via the outer ring.
Self tappers will work, if you drill 2 holes thru the outer steel part of the seal, screw in 2 self tappers and screw them in they should bottom out on the back of the cover and if you keep screwing, they should jack the seal out. Dont put the screws in the 12/6 o clock position as there is a gap at the bottom to allow oil to return to the sump, just make sure you clean out any swarf that may be lurking around.

if you mean the crank oil seal , yes it's easy to get out , just remove the front pulley ( oopppss ) and it comes out real easy there is plenty of room to prise it out as the pulley fills the seal hole not the crank

IIRC the SDi does not not have the retainer plate,
