Would This Dizzy Work With This V8?

Post by Davo »

Hi. I'm new to this forum and to Rover V8s as well. I've got an engine that was a Rangie 3.5 EFI, but before I bought it it was converted to a 3.9 block, and with twin carbies. It's got an electronic distributor that would be the original one. Apparently the motor ran well, (I haven't tried it yet).

However, I see that some dizzys are going cheap like the ERR4739 here: http://www.duckworthparts.co.uk/acatalo ... very_.html but I can't figure out if it would work or not. Would this one, being from a 3.9, be better than what I've got?

Yes, I just spent over an hour doing searches here but it didn't help!

Dave,

Welcome to the board, this is probably the best source of anything Rover V8.

It would help if you could tell us the model No. of the distributor you already have.

No point in spending £80 if it's not going to give you any improvement.

Most of the electronic dizzys are now 15 - 22 years so could benefit from a bit of care and attention.

The main types are 35DE8 Opus.worth replacing. 35DM8 with seperate amplifier and the 35DLM8 which has the amp (little black box) attached to the side of the dizzy, which is the latest type as fitted to the 3.9 engines and late SD1' 3.5's

What Vehicle is the engine in and do you intend doing any mods to the engine.

G'day, and thanks for the welcome. When I found this forum I couldn't believe how much information is here!

The current dizzy is a 35DM8. This engine will be fitted to my old SIIA Land-Rover, set up like a SIII Stage I with the Rangie gearbox and so on, and will be used in remote areas out here in the bush. So if I can replace something with a new part, I do, as reliability is vital.

The question is whether this new distributor will better match this converted engine than the old distributor. I'm guessing the old dizzy is still set up for a 3.5, whereas this new one if for a high-comp 3.9, which is what I've got, just with carbies instead of EFI. I probably won't modify this engine, just make it as reliable as possible. I'm a long, long, long way from a dyno, sad to say!

The only issue that I'm aware of with the V8 distributors is that the amplifiers can & do fail. Whatever you end up doing (I've got no real opinion on that), take a spare amplifier with you at all times!

Davo,

If you have a DM8 it has the seperate amplifier normally mounted with the coil, these are usually fairly reliable as are mounted away from the engine and don't suffer from the heat transfer that the 35DLM8 do with the amp on the side of the dizzy.

Downside is that these amps are expensive to replace and if you haven't got the matching amp it would be cost effective to buy the later dizzy you mentioned which will be a 35DLM8 but make sure you have a matching coil which is a Lucas DLB198 or Bosch equivalent.

For reliabilty issues you can obtain a spare amp to carry in the vehicle as suggested by Chris, they can be bought in the Uk at most motor factors for around £20 and are produced by Intermotor and this type are remotely mounted and suffer less from the heat problem which may be relvent to your location.

See this thread.

Okay, thanks for that very helpful information. Yes, I'd certainly have a spare amp! I was thinking of taking it off the dizzy and mounting it separately, which would also make it easy to swap.

Now, would this new distributor, meant for a 3.9, be a better match for the engine I've got?

Thats what us chevy guys call a 4 pin HEI module - found inside those massive dizzys with the coil embedded on the top - They can also fail unexpectedly - I used to carry a spare one, but then again I always carried a spare condensor for the crappy mallory dual point and I also carry a spare edis8 module for the current setup!!!

I tend to use twin core screened microphone cable from the VR sensor to the module to minimise noise.
The module needs a decent earth and to be bolted to a piece of ally or steel with heat transfer compound.
