4 Speed options ?

Post by JSF55 »

So i'm running the pop with a GM180 3 speed auto in there, i would like to go for a 4 speed auto of some kind, now all the landy/rangie are 4wd the sherpa ones are rare as hens teeth, but a friend of a friend suggested that it may be possible to use the 4 speed box from a vauxhall carlton? anyone else tried fitting anything diffrent to the back of thier rover? not intrested in manual as theres just enough room for 2 pedals ! john

Cant say for sure if they fit Rover blocks, but have you thought of a 700 r4, its 3 speed plus overdrive.

I'm looking for one for myself at the moment to replace the one on my Camaro.

To buy new from the states you are looking at about £700 plus postage.

Waiting to hear from a guy in Sussex that may have some re-con boxes.
It's taken longer than I thought !!

Speak to Adrian at americanv8engines.co.uk - he has boxes for rebuild or Alders automatics should have them to.

I was reading through ur site most of the afternoon, very well done, but i wanted a simple and cheap, lol, option, for 700 quid i would be better off buying a complete ambulance or riot van and going that way !

We've went through this on the old forum.

ZF 4HP22 IS the easiest way to go.

They are easily sourced from XJ40 Jags, all you need to do is bolt on an RV8 bellhousing, torque convetor etc from a classic Range Rover and you have exactly what you want - a 2WD 4 speed RV8 Auto box.

The HP22 is a fully mechanical box and has no TC lock as far as I remember - you have to go to a HP24 to get ecu control of shifts and lock up. I can't think where for the moment, but pretty sure you can get an aftermarket ecu to work the 4HP24 (pretty much mechanically the same as a 22 though).

I have an XJ40 HP22 in the shed if you're interested, left over from before I swapped to 'manual' TF727 in mine.

FAO Eliot,

I have been speaking to John Alder about a new box. The box I need is for a v6 Camaro my V8 Camaro was sold two days ago ( trying not to cry ).

The V6 700 r4 are different fittings than the V8 so he has none of the shelf but I'm still looking at £1000 bill for box rebuild and torque converter.

Going to have to do some saving.

Cheers

Chris

I did at the time of writing ! i was going to get a range rover box complete with torque convertor, but no flex plate, and also a bmw box to rob the tail housing off, which leaves me with the flex plate problem, but now i'm thinking it would be easier to wait for a LDV set up to be come available.............. this ebay has far too much for sale on it !!

The LDV & Range Rover ZF4HP22 boxes are identical at the front, torque converter, flexplate, valve body etc etc.

There are a set of shims that you are supposed to fit to the end of the crank to get the torque convertor to align in the oil pump properly. Rimmer Bros sell them.

The main difference between the BMW and LDV tailcones are:
- LDV one has massive bearings
- LDV one has a speedometer drive.

It's also important to keep the Range Rover governor as otherwise the shift points will be wrong.
