Landie / P6 lump
I have been offered a V8 lump out of a landrover for £50 - I am going to look at it tomorrow. The landie was scrapped last week and was running right up to its demise. I have been told the engine previously lived in a P6, therefore I am assuming that it may have 10.5:1 compression. Should it be avoided? I have an SD1 that I am in the process of collecting parts for, I thought this may tide me over until I can afford the parts to rebuild the lump I have started work on - at the present time it is difficult to justify spending £4-500 on parts for something that is a project. I have the SD1 heads, timing cover/oil pump, dizzy, sump and carbs. Any opinions would be appreciated.
Don't see why it shouldn't be worth a punt. For £50 its not really a waste of money, even if it is a dud you'll get that back by selling it on, or even just the old parts. You've got the front cover and other bits to make it an easy fit into the SD1, and you know it was running up until recently, which you can never be sure of with ebay buys etc
do you know the mileage?

Nothing wrong with the P6 engine, it just isn't as good as the newer ones. You have most of the parts that make the later 3.5's better so if you wanted to put a gasket set on it you could swap the parts over. 10.5:1 compression is a little high on standard cam for normal unleaded but it will work ok. It might not have that anyway. For £50 it has to be a good deal really.
