What to do......

Post by need4speed »

I had planned on buying a pair of real steel's new cylinder heads for my 4.6, but due to few other things that have cropped up the money will have to be spent on other things....boooo hissss
Im currently sitting with a pair of 4.6 heads. What can i do to them to give some worthwhile gains? ive got little money to spend on them but plenty of time...Any ideas welcome. Oh i have a dremel but unfortunately no air-line for higher speed tools.

could hire a compressor and buy a high speed tool thing and port them yourself. It's really a specialist job and you are supposed to use a flow bench and what hav ya, but my dad did it on his tr6 head and that worked well so it is possible to do it your self.

There's probably some literature on the net on where and how you can remove material in your rover heads for the best gains.

OK
let get started. It is always better plan what to do and how much $ you can spend on heads.
The basics are get as much flow as possible. the easyest way is to clean ning ports and gasket muching.
info:
http://www.sa-motorsports.com/diyport.aspx
read very careful and just follow step by step. I have made this on my chevy SB cast iron cylinder heads. this taked 4 evenings. I did is firs time. it is easy, just start careful, don't remove many material.

if You have no compresed air (me too) use something like this
http://www.amazon.com/Dremel-MultiPro-7 ... B0000302Y2
(dont order this it is only for represent!!!)
but 230V powered with not less then 150W powered and aprocsimatly 10000-up rpm. I used cheap 165W FERM production for 30 EUR it came with extention cable and some abrasives to start with...

make 3 agle valve job. go www.carcraft.com great article should be in technical article section.
(some mashining needed)

You also may want bigger and lightweit valves, reteiners , and propably 10 degr. locks...

finaly if later you will want instal cam with bigger valve lift possible you will need to mashine your cyl head again, to make it capable with big lift and stronger(ussusly they are wider) springs.

I suggest You to plan starting with camshaft and rocker selection
then you will know lift, and valve spring requirements. based on this you will know do you need head top mashining, then decide about bigger valves and count the total..

ussualy it is esear to get new performance heads...
