How good is EFI?

Post by mgbloke »

My MGB with 4.6 Rover is making good power, 293fly/w hp and about 300 torques.
Still got a few problems with the edelbrock 500/600 hybrid.
Mainly track related, fuel starvation on extreme cornering/high revs, and a very annoying tendency to ice up if there is moisture in the air and outside temp is 5deg or below.
Ive been thinking about fuel injection and engine management.
Been reading up and im gradually getting my head round it!
I have a gems inlet manifold and plenum/plumbing etc from a 4.0L engine.
The 65mm opening/throttle seems a tad small. What would be the optimum throttle body size to make similar hp.
Been looking at 70mm and 75mm mustang throttle bodies from the states.
I could get an ACT plenum and mount a mustang t/body.
Can I do away with an AFM and use a MAP sensor instead?
Planning on an Emerald ECU
Basically is this worth doing as it will end up costing around £2K with everything.
Ive got so many un answered questions where is the best place to find the answers?
Feels like starting out on an EFI apprenticeship.

You need to ask why you are getting fuel starvation on corners ? Carb systems are very forgiving like that. EFI is not, and will need a proper fuel tank setup, so the pump never sees air.

I would have thought a single 65mm would be ample for 300bhp..although bigger may be better.

If you already have it, and no money is involved, try it and see.

Yes, chuck the AFM in the bin. Use either a map sensor, or TPS as the main load parameter. Either are fine for n/a applications.

The fuel problem is definateley the Carb. Have planned a swirl pot for the new setup if I decide to go ahead.

Thanks, plenum looks interesting. I need to find out some more info before I make a final decision.
One thing bothers me, the FI setup is about twice the weight of the carb setup.

Well as a last ditch attempt to get the carb sorted for track use I am now fitting another fuel inlet so that both float chambers have a direct supply. Also fitting larger needle valves and re sdjusting the floats.

Seems that no one is shouting for Fuel injection perhaps the Carb will rule after all!

Mark,

You could try one of these swirl pot/filters which should cure your fuel starvation problems provided the carb is properly set up.

If you decide to go EFI later it provide sufficient reserve without having to resort to a special EFi tank.
