fuel filter on my Rover sd1

My fuel filter on my Rover sd1

Has any one changed the fuel filter for a small inline one before,
Can this be done ?
Is there any reason that I have to have that great big one siting in the engine bay???

would a small in line filter work ?

if its an injection engine, keep the biggy, if its carbed, the small one will probably work,

IT IS THE EFI, it started life a s a 3.9 and is now a 4.2 efi ???

I forget which side of the pump the filter is, but if it's on the engine side, then it will be under about 30psi pressure......

I guess the other point is that the fuel is continuously circulating at a fair old rate, so a cheapo small one might flow enough but it might also get blocked up fairly quickly.

I've no actual experience though!

I have the cheapo plastic one on the GT40

It is on the Low pressure side before the swirl pot and works OK but does gum up fairly quickly

Easy enough to change

If it on the HP side of the injection pump I would say no way - pressurised fuel in a soft plastic filter would not be a good idea

Then again there are metal cased units you can get that look grear and are a load smaller.

The manufacturer put the big one on there for a reason, they didn't want
to replace it. So if you think about it, it was a cost saving measure for them,
when it gets plugged, its beyond the warranty period, so you get to pay to
get it replaced...

Fit the big one...

I would be very tempted to use a big filter on the LP side, its not only pressure that the filters have to cope with its volume too, Those little filters are designed for Carburated engines without the flow back to the tank a FI pump will give,, the other advantage of a big filter is you have protection against sucking air built into the system
