e.bay has 2 35dm8 dizzys for sale, according to D. Hardcastles book thats the best oe dizzy to have, one's from a range rover, one says its from an efi lump, I'm rebuilding a carb sd1 lump, Question is... is there a difference between the 2? if so, which one would be better for me?

I had heard, although I have no evidence of this myself, that the main visible distinction between Lucas distributors made for RR and the sd1 is the location of the vacuum advance module on the distributor body. There is said to be a difference.
I would be inclined therefore to go for the one designated 'efi' as you indicated. Using carbs will not be a problem. You can always have the distibutor regraphed to suit the application if you wish.
