DISASTER HAS STRUCK ! RANGE ROVER WIRING
A major disaster has occured today. I got into my RRC this morning, cranked it over to find it would not fire up. Next thing i knew all i could smell was electrical burning.
I managed to disconnect the battery as fast as possible but the damage was already done. It appears one of the wires going to the coil had shorted on the inner wing.
The complete loom is scrap as far as i can tell having melted various other wires too.
Any ideas where i could source a used one from ?

hi
what year is your range rover? the wiring loom on the rangie "evolved" from the original 73/74 one without ever being redesigned so if you have a newer RR it may not be the disaster it seems. The later additions to the loom were just added to the original design and the original four fuse fuse box was replaced with 4 fusable links and the new fuse box tacked on the end. It is often the case that one or more of these links burn out rather than the whole loom and the reason you no longer get 12v on the fuse box is the link has gone. Happened to my last rangie and I lost heater motor aircon heated seats and a bunch of other stuff in one go with the live side of the fuses gone. The down side is they are a b*****r to find, but worth a go, (I had an opertunity to sell the RR on the spot for more than it was worth, the guy who bought it off me fixed it, and was still talking to me 18 months later so it can't have been that bad to do)
good luck

poppet valves rule!
It certainly does not look good to me. Ive checked the wiring diagram and it appears its the ballast resistor wire.
It runs behind the dash which is now stripped, its completely fried (insulation completely burnt away) and also melted several other wires with it.
If i had not had a spanner to hand to disconnect the battery it would of gone up in smoke.

sorry to hear that, does not sound good to me I must confess. I got a replacment loom for my first range rover from craddocks (I think) it was a salvage one and about £140 (8 years ago), to be honest I stripped it to repair the one I had because it was partly burnt aswell. A new one is a fortune, if you can find one.
The other route you could go is a loom from someone like premier wiring looms http://www.premierwiring.co.uk/ I got my kit car loom from him and he is very helpfull and the loom I have is well made. Also his instructions though generic are good and based on lucas colour coding.

You can replace the eureka wire with either a ballast resistor or just get a 12v coil.
After repairing it, dont forget to top up your Lucas Smoke, now that some of it escaped.

Have to disagree with you there! Everybody knows that once you let the smoke out it cant be put back inEliot wrote:You can replace the eureka wire with either a ballast resistor or just get a 12v coil.

Hi Wayno
I think this is what you are looking for http://www3.telus.net/bc_triumph_registry/smoke.htm

Wiring loom is back spent this morning getting it all in. Just after a few pointers.
Theres a small vacuum pipe that fixes to the heater box control behind the dash and runs into the engine bay. Where does it fit on the engine ?
Also along the n/s/f inner wing top ive got 2 wires which i cant suss where they go. There 2 together with spade type connectors one brown and one white any ideas
