What's the difference between these sump gasket kits?

Post by Magicdrshoon »

I'm looking for a gasket kit for the water pump and sump (and probably a few others by the time I'm finished!).

Looking at the Rimmer Bros site ( http://www.rimmerbros.co.uk/Item--i-GRID008874 ) there seems to be 5 items which have the same components included, but ranging in price from £12.50 to £70 for the genuine Land Rover kit.

I notice that some of them stipulate that they are for post 1991 engines, but not sure why.

There's still two to choose from which are for the SD1 engine.

Does anyone know if there is much difference between them?

Cheers.

I am not sure of the change in 1991 but there are usually 3 prices for any landrover item, lowest (aftermarket) take your chances, middle range, OEM manufactured by genuine parts supplier but not supplied in genuine packages or thru the landrover supply chain, Highest Genuine in genuine packaging supplied via Landrover parts chain.

Later engines, ie cross bolted engines need a different sump gasket.

For engines with a non dizzy type front cover, the front cover gasket and the sump gasket are different to the earlier dizzy types.

If you are using a non dizzy front cover then you need the sump to match as there is an extra bolt at the front of the sump.

Later engines also have twin lips on the front cover oil seal. This could be to do with the fact that there is a crank driven oil pump directly behind it.

What year are the suffix B engines, in the disco the crank driven oil pump was from 1995, the facelift 300tdi era, was it earlier in the RR?

The site even lists them as Genuine, OEM or aftermarket.

I tend to go with OEM for most parts i buy. I'll only use aftermarket/cheap-as-possibe if the impact of a failure, bad fitment or poor quality is low.

I believe the suffix B engine with a crank driven oil pump was introduced in January 1994.

I spent a long time looking for sump gaskets and finally bought one that they said would not leak. I bought it from eBay Classseparts but they do not seem to list it at the moment. there were a few companies selling this type, though.

Impressed with it as it has not leaked and cost £25. I did do the sump bolts up a firm hand tight on a 1/4 socket that's a bit more than the torque setting but on the torque setting it had a very slight leak in several places. I'm not sure my torque setting was very accurate, though as it was via a torque drill setting.

I just used a regular cork gasket & stiffening plates to spread the load better.
Works so far.

Are the stiffening plates an OE Rover part or are they available to buy separately?
