which variant 4hp22 auto box?

Post by octanejunkie »

Decided to probably use a ZF 4HP22 in my Granada RV8 project as i have the torque converter and bellhousing for the Range Rover. Also, the ring gear is still attached to the engine. Are these all the parts i need for the HP22 transmission to bolt up?
Finally i noticed that the 4HP22 is fitted to various RWD cars over its production life including many BMWs. Will any of these be alright or does it have to be a Jag one? People round my way want silly money for secondhand Jag boxes, thats if i can even find any!
I've got a Leaky Borg Warner 65 that came from a P6 and a GM box from an SD1 in the garage, but i dont know if they're suitable. Both seem to leak transmission fluid from the bellhousing end if they're tipped up.
Please advise guys!

It won't fit, its just too big!

The BMW boxes that I know of are electronic controlled so you will either have to convert it to manual if that can even be done or try and control it. Don't forget you have a sherpa option which is a straight bolt on.

I found mine on ebay from a guy breaking a jag, i think it was a 2.8 xj40? it has to have no sports mode on it, i sourced all the other parts on ebay and a guy local supplied the bellhousing, i'm pretty sure that the BW65/66, GM180 and the zf box are all the same length, also i stuck with the jag as the prop bolted straight on, theres some pics of the build on my webshots, john
So thats where it went !

You really need to swap the governor over as well as that affects the shift point. I have a Volvo governor in my Sherpa box, and the full throttle shift point is about 6K which is a shade high. A Range Rover one is the right one.

The Range Rover and Sherpa boxes are identical apart from the tailcone. The Sherpa tailcone is 2WD, whereas the Range Rover one connects to the transfer box. Changing the rear end is a full stripdown / rebuild.

The sherpa tailcone has a speedo cable drive, the BMW / Jag / Volvo boxes don't. The sherpa tailcone is also much more substantial.

See http://www.cowdery.org.uk/zf.php for some pics of a stripdown / rebuild.

You have to put the torque converter into the box, then offer the two up to the engine without tipping the converter out. If you fix the converter to the engine, then try to fit the box, it is likely to damage the pump.

It's a good box though.

Chris.
