96mm bore headgasket

Post by 996TURBO »

Hello,

I'm looking for a headgasket to fit a 5.0 supercharged Rover V8.

It is a JE Engineering Range Rover P38.

The engine has 96mm forged pistons.

I only find standard for 94mm pistons.

You can get Multi Layer Steel gaskets in several thicknesses and bore sizes..

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Cometic-Head- ... 41810ff26d

There are not cheap but they are good!

Looking at the feedback on the bloke selling them on ebay would make me not buy them from him but loads of places sell MLS gaskets!

Hi
I use them on the SBC in my slingshot, I run 11.5:1 cr, methanol and now four runs on 15% nitro and they have held up very well, very good value IMHO
best regards

The standard gaskets are made in such a way that approximately half of the fire ring is not even crushed between the head and the block, this is due to the large chamfer at the top of each bore. As your bores are bigger than standard probably none of the fire ring would have been compressed, this allows the combustion gases ro attack the rest of the gasket.

The price in that link is for one gasket only, not a pair :D

5.0 pushed by one M90, there's your issue. That M90 is way to small to suplie even 1 psi boost on a 5.0 engine. They can handle 14000rpm and after that they get thermal very insufficient.
quick calculation says 18000rpm blower speed (that's 200% overdrive )gives about 5psi boost on your engine or 8psi if your not having superb flowing heads and cam.

That intake air temperature must be sky high, even with three intercoolers.

Hi
for gasket thickness you want the distance between the underside face of the head and the top of the piston (the squish distance) to be between .035" and .045" so measure the distance the piston is down the bore at TDC take that away from .04" and buy the one closest to that thickness.

Dunno about this 5.0 engine but generally the Rover pistons are down the bores by 40 thou even at TDC so when you stick a 40 thou head gasket on the squish ends up at 80 thou which is worse than no squish at all. The normal solution is a 40 thou block skim!

Getting the squish right is good for the engine but you need to work out the CR to make sure that it is suitable for the type of engine that you are building.

Finally due to the dish in standard Rover pistons the squish band width is pretty small what ever you do! (Dunno what pistons this 5.0 engine is using!)
